Punjab has been one of the most prosperous states in India since independence by way of green & white revolution, however, this achievement was washed over due to insufficient growth of industry in Punjab. Initially, certain industrial segments started well, but due to lack of sufficient and affordable technical manpower & absence of innovative upgradation in technologies, the industries of the state lagged behind as compared to other states like Maharashtra Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh. To address this issue of Technical Manpower shortage and to usher into a new era of Industrial Development comparable to International Standards , the Punjab Government constituted Punjab Technical University (PTU) in 1997 by an act of State Legislative. The University was entrusted with the responsibility of developing the new generation of technical manpower that can spearhead the industrial development of the State. Punjab Technical University has been formed to be the grooming ground for the future Engineers, Managers and Researchers.

As of today, PTU affiliates more than 380 Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Architecture Colleges in the State that are approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). PTU understands that restricting technical education to its campuses only will not serve its objective of creating a knowledge rich society. It has firmly understood that latest technical education has to be spread to the general masses. This is how the Distance Education Programme (DEP) of the Punjab Technical University was conceived The objective of the programme is to impart affordable, relevant, skill-based & remunerative Technical Education to the masses of the country. Today, the University has more than 2000 Learning Centres spread across the country offering quality technical education in the fields of Information Technology and Management, Paramedical Technology, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management & Tourism, Media and Mass Communication & Journalism etc.
