A DevOps role can vary highly between companies – Some companies renamed their Middle ware teams to DevOps , some call their Operations Team or Build & Release Team the DevOps team.

However in my personal opinion, DevOps should rather be a cross functional role that sits across different Functional Units and encourage and promote DevOps concepts among these areas.

They should Drive and lead the DevOps-ification efforts in various functional areas (like Development, QA, Ops and beyond) such as:

Automation of Possible tasks in all these areas
Collaboration Between these functional areas in a traceable manner
Monitoring and Continuous Improvement
Continuous Integration and Testing
And anything that will help speed up the software delivery without compromising code in an easily repeatable, testable and traceable manner.
