Tanjore painting is a classical South Indian painting style, which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur (tanjore) in Tamil Nadu. Tanjore paintings are characterized by rich, flat and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. Essentially serving as devotional icons, the subjects of most paintings are Hindu gods, goddesses, and saints.
The art of tanjore in modern days are also found on a variety of products such as bandarwals, side hangings, clocks, table mats with coasters, marble chowkis, flower pots, various marble display items and many more such products. This art has taken a vast form in various ways.
