From ‘huh?’ to ‘aha!’

You know that moment? When a piece of the puzzle finally clicks into place inside your head and that new concept suddenly makes sense. Your eyes grow wide in equal parts comprehension and amazement; amazement at the new idea as well as your ability to grasp it. It’s that moment that Basecamp is dedicated to. All we want is to recreate that ‘aha!’ moment again and again. For anyone who loves to learn.


An asylum of curiosity

The learning we do to satisfy our sense of wonder is always so much more gratifying than the learning we do because we are supposed to. And that kind of learning cannot be segregated neatly into chapters, lectures and semesters. It doesn’t advertise itself through a prestigious acronym suffixed to one’s name.

We have a singular rule at Basecamp: you must come to learn for the joy of learning itself. Not just to ace that paper. Not just to impress your friends. Not just to get that promotion. Those are, perhaps, worthy pursuits. But there is something sacrosanct about that burning ache to find an answer; to wrap one’s head around a new idea or learn a new craft. Finding the answer sometimes takes a minute, and sometimes a lifetime proves too little. That’s not the point. What matters is the quest to understand. To learn. And sometimes simply to look up at the stars and wonder.


Learning without limits

Ever wish school had educated you on how to manage your money instead of having you cram a dozen different economic theories? Or taught how to have great relationships with friends and family instead of memorizing the grisly details of wars and intrigues between forgotten kings? Or showed you how to roll the perfect j… well, roll one instead of drawing complex organic molecules from memory?

Basecamp hopes to do just that. To bring practical, hands-on learning across an ever-growing variety of subjects and skills that real people want to learn about. Our wild dream is to build a campus and a community of learners and coaches for the open and unbounded exchange of knowledge and skills. To create a forum for discussion, debate and even disagreement. To transcend barriers of age, profession or formal education and let each individual choose what they wish to learn and how. To create a space where one can simply share the joy of learning with other curious minds.

We realize that we will probably fall far short of our lofty goals, but any progress we make in the cause of learning shall be our small vindication.
