About Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute in Sarodya Nagar Road, Puri

Steel is in everything from our cars to our cutlery. It contributes to nearly 2% of GDP and employs over 500,000 people. Owing to its connection with core infrastructure segments of the economy, the steel industry is of high priority. Government of India has allowed 100 per cent FDI through the automatic route in the Indian steel sector. The future of the Indian steel industry is bright. The government plans to increase infrastructure spending from the current 5 per cent GDP to 10 per cent by 2017. With urban population increasing globally, there is a greater need for steel to build public-transport infrastructure.

As a part of the capacity building effort to cater to the projected technical manpower need for the future in the Steel Sector, the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India has set up Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI). BPNSI is one of the Subordinate Offices of Ministry of Steel, Government of India
(Link: http://steel.gov.in/subordinate.htm.) The main objective of BPNSI is to compile the need for Human Resource Development and Technology Upgradation in the steel sector by training. (BPNSI) is managed by a Board of Governors consisting of members from Industry, Educational Institutions, Industrial Associations and Ministry of Steel under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India.

Its flagship programme “Advanced Certificate Course in Iron and Steel Manufacturing and Plant Management” admits graduate and diploma engineers and trains them in all the aspects of Iron and Steel Manufacturing and Plant Management. The Training Curriculum includes Raw Material Preparation, Coke Preparation, Sinter Preparation, Iron Making, Steel Making, Rolling, Forging, Process Control Automation, Plant Management along with Energy and Environment Management. In addition to 1 year of classroom training, the students undergo 6 months of practical training in an integrated steel plant.
Dept. of steel and mines, Govt. of Odisha, is the nodal department for the Institute in the state. State Govt. has written letters to all the steel plants in Odisha urging them to take advantage of these resources created by the government for rapid growth of the steel sector.

The Institute has produced over 150 steel engineers over last six years serving more than 30 companies across the country. Some of the companies which have recruited students from the Institute are: Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited, Aarti Steel, Suraj Products Ltd., Mideast Integrated Steel Ltd., Bhusan Steel, Action Ispat, Surendara Mining Industries Pvt. Ltd., BRG Iron & Steel, Maithan Ispat, MSP Metalic
Ltd., Visa Steel and Tata Metalics.
Admission Information:
Eligibility: B. Tech or Diploma in Engineering in (Chem. / Electrical/ Electronics/ Instrumentation/ Mech.
/ Metallurgy). Required fees: Rs. 40,000 /- per Semester, Registration fee Rs. 500/- and Caution money
deposit Rs.2000/-. Initially Rs.42,500/- need to be deposited in the form of DD in favour of “BIJU PATNAIK
NATIONAL STEEL INSTITUTE” payable at PURI.
