From an early age, Sourav Mukherjee naturally perceived and cherished the qualities of fine art -the purity, intensity and emotional content that made a powerful, lasting impact on him.He has a strong fascination for the human face. He constantly sketches the faces of his family, friends and even strangers he encounters.
He createshis own style that evokes his straight-forward quality and inspireshim each time he looks at them. His aesthetic sense for the use of spacein a painting, the dynamics he creates with light and shadow, his appreciation for beauty and his ability to paint more than just what he sees, all enables him to create art in a manner that is indescribable.
Sourav has keen sense of observation and an ability to bring out the beauty of a face.He can express hisappreciation of human differences and desire to understand othersby his play with colours. The focus of his paintings is on the eyes that invites the viewers to experience common humanity. He creates his own paintings and designs by combining realism with fantasy.
During his college days in St. Xavier’s College, he focused on painting classes and studied colour theory. With the encouragement of his college art teacher, Prof.TamalMitra, Sourav fully realized that his career was evolving towards portraiture. He finished his Master’s Degree in Film Studies from Jadavpur Universityand Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia with Specialisation in Animation from St. Xavier's College (Autonomous) Kolkata. He has also done his Senior Diploma in Painting from ShastriyaSangeet Kala Parishad and awarded with a Gold Medal.
It wasn't long before Sourav's reputation as a portraitist grew, he was awarded 'The Xavierian Artist 2014' by Honourable Governor of West Bengal, Sri KesariNathTripathi.Recently, he also received The 'Kalanand Award 2016'
His work has appeared in numerous illustration, advertising and design annuals.During his career as an illustrator, he was also commissioned to paint. He has been doing freelance graphic designing from past five years and a partial list of clients includes - The Statesman, Linde Group, Rupa Publications, Patton, Rungta Industries, Gee Ltd., UNESCO, MHRD of Govt. of India and others.
He's also extended his artistic intellect to other realms of visual expression, including media science, animation, digital marketing and motion graphics. Sourav himself is a distinguished educator, who teaches Media Science and Animation at iLEAD College in Kolkata in addition to conducting portrait and figure painting workshops around the country.
He conveys a fusion of his feelings for each subject with an intuitive use of colour. He hopes that his portraits reveal that every person of every race and culture is interconnected, indispensable and radiant with astonishing beauty. He is compelled to paint people, as he believes that no other subject is more complex, emotive and thought provoking than the human being. He paints portraits and figurative works in watercolours, with a focus on capturing the inner person in expression, light play and detail. He likes to capture warmth and depth in his portraits, to hold the attention of the viewer and tell a message open to their interpretation.
Sourav wishes to do further research in mixed media and graphic installations.
