Mass media are important component of our social system. They have a social responsibility of information, education, and creation of awareness. They also entertain, motivate and transmit culture across generations. Today the mass media (Newspapers, Magazines, Television and Radio) have emerged as important means of communication and education. Television and Radio cut across the literacy barrier and their reach extends to remote villages and small towns. To meet the growing demands of media in India; television and radio channels, newspapers and magazines and advertising and public relations professionals, there is need for journalists and communicators with social sensitivity, communication skills and awareness of current happenings.

Keeping this objective in mind the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University started a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism in 1986-87. In the year 2000-01 a Post Graduate Diploma in Mass Communication was introduced which was upgraded to M A in Mass Communication in 2007-08.
